Yusuf Patel
Yusuf Patel is the Founder and Managing Director of the Muslim Family Initiative, formerly known as SREIslamic, an organisation dedicated to empowering Muslim parents to address the challenges posed by Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) in the UK. Since 2008, Yusuf has been at the forefront of supporting parents as they navigate the complexities of RSE, particularly in relation to sensitive topics such as sexual messaging and LGBT ideologies. Over the years, he has delivered more than 2,000 workshops and seminars, directly reaching and assisting tens of thousands of Muslim parents in understanding how to safeguard their religious values in response to these educational policies.
Yusuf is also the author of the landmark research report, Could Do Better: How Ideology is Pitting Schools Against Parents, which includes unique research into the challenges parents face with RSE in schools. This significant report was sent to all of England’s MPs, raising awareness of the growing tensions between school policies and parental concerns.
Beyond his work on RSE, Yusuf’s leadership in the Muslim community has been pivotal in several key campaigns. In 2012, he led the Muslim community’s opposition to the legalisation of same-sex marriage, a significant movement that garnered widespread engagement. In 2022, he spearheaded another campaign against the government’s stance on 'conversion therapy', while consistently encouraging the Muslim community to engage with consultations on 'gender identity' and revisions to statutory guidance on education.
Due to his extensive expertise and proactive approach, Yusuf has become a trusted voice within the Muslim community. Imams, community leaders, and Islamic organisations regularly seek his counsel on critical issues surrounding sex education and the perceived indoctrination of LGBT values in schools. His ongoing work and advocacy aim to ensure that the voices of Muslim parents are heard and their concerns addressed in matters affecting their children’s education and upbringing. Through the Muslim Family Initiative, Yusuf continues to lead impactful campaigns and provide practical support to protect the moral and religious fabric of Muslim families in an ever-evolving social landscape.
